Oddball Delivery from the Card Chop

I'm still trying to catch up on my mail and today's edition brings to a nice little oddball surprise from Steve, proprietor of The Card Chop.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love notes within trade packages.  It can be something as simple as "You've been Zippy Zapped!" or "I hope you like the cards."   A thoughtful note just adds to the community feel of the blogosphere.

Let's check out that Jody Davis!
Hey!  A cameo from Smokey the Bear!  This over-sized card, 4" by 6", is great and I think I'm going to stand it up in the back of one of my bobblehead display cases so I can see it on a more regular basis.

Steve also included some cards of Jorge Soler.  Soler has had the spotlight taken off of him ever since Kris Bryant made his MLB Debut.
When I first saw Jorge play for the Peoria Chiefs back in 2012 he physically stood out: he hit the ball a country mile in batting practice and he liked to show off his arm.  But from what I saw in the few games I went to he didn't smile much and there wasn't much pep in his step. It just didn't appear to the naked eye that he wanted to be there.  He was the last off the field, every stinking time, and he never flashed those pearly whites.

Thus, I was not a fan.   I like hustle.  I like seeing players, who play a game for a living, enjoying themselves.

From the games I've been able to take in on TV this year he's come across as a different man.  The physical tools are still there, but he's showing more personality and there's been more hustle to his game.

I'm on board again.  I like referring to Jorge Soler as the Bat Wielding Ninja. (See the picture to the left.)

Additionally, I'm currently trying to snipe an autograph of Soler's from The Bay.  Soler hasn't been hot lately and he's actually battling an ankle injury.  Perhaps these are ingredients which will help me snag a cheap auto?  We'll have to wait and see!

Thanks for thinking of me, Steve!  Look for some Braves to hit your mailbox before too long!

  1. I'm not sure if he responds anymore but I got a TTM return from Soler way back in 2013.

  2. Gotta love those Smokey the Bear cards. Soler does seem like a fun-loving ballplayer these days, from what I've seen in Cubs games this year.
