Retail Purchase: 2016 Topps National League Standouts

I was in Kankakee, Illinois, early this week visiting family and I had a moment so I stopped in a big box store and almost walked out with a blaster of Archives. I put it back, because really all I want is a Crash Davis card (sans auto) and I would have felt some serious buyer's remorse afterwards. How could Topps not put non-auto cards Kevin Costner or Susan Sarandon in this insert set?  So frustrating.

Instead I grabbed the above number for a five-spot and happily strolled out to the parking lot.

You may be thinking it was a silly purchase, but remember I'm a Cubs fan AND Kris Bryant is in this set. His card alone could have possibly set me back the five bucks. And hey, my blogging friends aren't going to complain when they find these in their mailboxes down the road. Right?
For the record, there is an AL Standouts set available, too . . . but yeah, there aren't any Cubs in that one so it's resting on the shelf at the store.

If you see something you need to add to your collection just drop me a comment.

This just in: The Mets pitching staff is good.
For the record, if you want the Giancarlo card, then I'm sending you Dee Gordon as a "bonus". I have enough Marlins and no takers!

I've been too lazy to check and see if Topps was lazy in the creation of these cards. Are all the pictures the same from the flagship product? Kris Bryant's is about the same. Although, the "Future Stars" label is missing, an NL stamp is now present, and the photo has been zoomed in a click or two.
The backs seem to be pretty much the same, but the numbers all start with NL.
Here's the fronts of the last two Cubs in the set.

Three Cubs, some trade bait, and no buyer's remorse for me.

Thanks for stopping by and try to stay cool today!

  1. I remember when I broke down the set a couple of years ago, quite a few guys weren't even All-Stars (and Baez was in last year's). I'm too lazy to look at the others but Arrieta wasn't one last year as his run didn't really start until after the break. Topps gets a little creative with these, don't they?

    1. After coming back to read somebody else's comment, I noticed that this year they are called Standouts rather than All-Stars. I guess Topps is getting creative in other ways, haha

  3. I have pulled this off a hook and put it back two different times at two different stores. I'm blaming the 2016 design -- again.

  6. I saw this in the retail store yesterday too. I like knowing what's coming, but in this case knowing what was inside made me put it back.

  7. One more homer and maybe Arenado would have edged Harper out of this set.
