Folder of Fun: Bull Durham (Page 3)

The Folder of Fun, as I like to call it, has been in the works for about three years. That's about the time I stopped buying retail and hobby packs and began tracking down cards which fit a certain general description: FUN.  Here's a link to the first post in this series if you'd like to go back and catch up. 

Two days ago I showed off cards from The Sandlot and today's subject matter is Bull Durham.

I was introduced to baseball cards during summer of 1988, thus I have a fondness for this design. It's simple and certainly works for well for a movie set in the late 80's.

I don't know much about script writers, directors or producers in general, but I would say I'm a fan of Ron Shelton.

Larry Hockett played the role of pitching coach well. This movie, although not my favorite, does have some great quotes in it. The whole locker room scene with about the "lollygaggers" is a classic.

I'm not sure why Topps included some of the lesser characters like Tony and Bobby rather than those played by Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon. I'm sure money presented some sort of obstacle.

Here's another character who had a smaller part.

I enjoyed Jimmy's part in the movie. His inclusion helped to demonstrate the broad types of personalities that can coexist in a clubhouse. I, for one, was more like Jimmy than the rest of my college teammates.

Millie was a fun character and I completely forgot her father had deep pockets.

Nuke Laloosh. The pitching phenom who tried to breath through his eyelids. "Goofily hilarious" if quite an appropriate description!

I recently read a post on A Pack To Be Named Later which showed off four over-sized Bull Durham cards. Those individuals included are Nuke, Millie, Annie Savoy and Crash Davis. I made my way to Ebay and felt fortunate to pick them up for less than five bucks. They will be a wonderful addition if I can find some pages to display them.

They should be here any day now!

A Very Vogel PWE

Earlier in the week we had a mailbox in the neighborhood fall victim to fireworks being set off inside. I saw it on my walk the morning after and it looked a bit charred and quite dented. Our neighborhood's Facebook group filled me in on the rest.

John, your host for the Big Fun Game and author Johnny's Trading Spot, sent me a seven card PWE which landed in my mailbox the other day. Somehow my mailbox withstood the blow of SEVEN Vogelbombs. Yes, our mailbox is built of some otherworldly metal for sure.

2017 Fire, A&G, Topps and Chrome rookie cards!

I should be able to retire on these beauties after Vogelbach wins a couple of MVPs. 

2018 Heritage:

If I ever have an opportunity for an in-person autograph of the Vogelmonster again I'm using this card for sure. 

2019 Topps:

Was I upset Vogelbach didn't have a card in Topps' flagship product until Update came out? Sure I was, but I forgave Topps for making me wait when I learned it would be an All-Star card. Check out the star with the one inside it on his bulging bicep. So cool!

2020 Topps:

After making the All-Star team and mashing 30 homers in 2019 Topps decided to place Vogelbach on its Series 1 checklist in 2020. Smart choice!

Folder of Fun: The Sandlot (Page 2)

It's a new month so let's try something new.  Something positive.

The Folder of Fun, as I like to call it, has been in the works for about three years. That's about the time I stopped buying retail and hobby packs and began tracking down cards which fit a certain general description: FUN.  Here's a link to the first post in this series if you'd like to go back and catch up. 

Page 2 and part of Page 3 contain The Sandlot cards from 2018 Topps Archives.

I picked this set up last summer on Ebay, after the hype of the initial release, and feel I got a pretty fair deal.

DeNunez is my favorite character from the movie and gets the number one spot in the page. I'm a former pitcher so I gravitate toward those who toe the bump. Outside of Benny, DeNunez also seemed to be a bit of a leader and have more confidence than the rest in the lot. Plus, he gets bonus points for the cool Kansas City Monarchs hat!

There's no movie without Scotty Smalls, right? I use the line "You're killing me Smalls" with my sixth grade girls softball players each fall. Occasionally I get a player who knows the line, but most don't. By the end of the season a majority of the team usually has seen the movie. 😀

I feel like everyone has a "Yeah-Yeah" in their past: someone who has a catchphrase they just couldn't stop repeating. He was a fun character.

The team was chocked full of personality and one of the biggest was Ham Porter.

Here's where I lose track of the characters a bit, or maybe they just aren't given as much depth as the others. I could never keep the two Timmons straight.

Timmy, the older of the two Timmons boys, is I another I just don't remember well.

Squints. Oh man, I have no trouble recalling him. I would have never had the guts to pull off what he did at the community swimming pool.

Weeks? Honestly, I don't recall him from the movie at all, but I suppose someone had to be the ninth man on the team.

The Beast! I'm a dog guy deep down and the role Hercules plays in this movie is perhaps the number one reason I continue to revisit this movie.

The Jet. He was the most gifted baseball player of the group, the de facto leader, and he also was cool enough to befriend Scotty Smalls. What a classy kid.

Wendy Peffercorn? I think I would have preferred Jame Earl Jones' character, Mr. Mertle, but Wendy Peffercorn is still a good choice.

Introducing the Folder of Fun: Peanuts (Page 1)

It's a new month so let's try something new.  Something positive.

When I need an escape from the on-goings of the real world, which seems pretty frequent as of late, I head on down to the man room and pull out a binder. Flipping the pages quickly takes me away from reality as my thoughts begin to circle around card designs, players, the photo selection and sometimes how the card was acquired. Each card tells a story . . . you just have to look closer at some than others.

I realize not every collector is a binder person, but I am and have been since I began collecting in 1988. Outside of the "hunt" for a certain card, adding to a player collection binder or finishing a set so that I can finally "double bag" the cards in pages is my favorite thing about collecting. I enjoy binders so much earlier this year I built an end table with the sole purpose of giving me more space to add more binders down the road.

If an acquaintance asked me why I collect cards I suppose I would retrieve this particular binder and ask them to flip through the pages. With any luck I wouldn't have to say a word and their question would be answered. 

The Folder of Fun

My Folder of Fun is a work in progress and it's my second favorite project right behind my Vogelmonster collection.

The first section of the Folder of Fun has to deal with movies and television.

I'm a collector who prides himself on organization, thus the tabs!

I picked up this 9-card set from Dave & Adam's a few years back for five bucks. In fact, once I committed to this project these were the first cards I added. As a result they lay claim to the first page in the binder.

1991 Ziploc Peanuts, #1 - Snoopy

Snoopy is my favorite character from Peanuts. Most dogs are incredibly quick, so he probably makes a perfect shortstop. Check out those stats!

1991 Ziploc Peanuts, #2 - Charlie Brown

Charlie Brown is good kid who can never catch a break. PB&J is a solid sandwich choice.

1991 Ziploc Peanuts, #3 - Lucy

Lucy is my least favorite character in this cartoon. She's particularly mean to Charlie Brown, she's always hitting on Shroeder, she's quite bossy, and apparently she can't catch a fly ball. 

1991 Ziploc Peanuts, #4 - Linus

Tuna salad is an underrated sandwich in my book. Observation: Linus is without his blanket. 

1991 Ziploc Peanuts, #5 - Sally

Sally, the little sister of Charlie Brown, favors a cream cheese and jelly sandwich? I've eaten many a sandwich in my day, but I've never optioned for that specific combination.

1991 Ziploc Peanuts, #6 - Woodstock

Woodstock is the MAN. I enjoy any comic strip he makes an appearance in way too much.

1991 Ziploc Peanuts, #7 - Schroeder

Shroeder, an excellent pianist, is the catcher. This bothers me a bit because catcher's fingers are at great risk for injury during a baseball game.

1991 Ziploc Peanuts, #8 - Peppermint Patty

Peppermint Patty always wears sandals, even on the baseball field. SMH.

1991 Ziploc Peanuts, #9 - Franklin

I'm a fan of Franklin's pants: green with black pinstripes. Some of the other characters are wearing shorts, but Franklin looks ready to play some ball. Also, grilled cheese is a solid sandwich choice, but not one I would seal up in a Ziploc bag and bring to work for lunch.

There you have it, page 1. I don't think I'll photograph the backs of all the cards in the folder, but I couldn't resist these. Good stuff all the way around.
