Here are your contestants:
On the left, we have the Zippy Zappy re-packs, and on the right we have the Canadian Cartes de Baseball that I was given as part of the blogger Secret Santa gift exchange. These are courtesy Mike, from Not Another Baseball Card Blog.
Today we'll see the first pack of the ZZ re-packs and go into the Cartes de Baseball only as far needed.
Here we go!
Round 1:
Point to Cartes de Baseball.
Score:
Zippy Zappy = 0
Cartes de Baseball = 1
Round 2:
I was curious what the back of the Star Wars card would look like, so I thought I would upload it for you viewers at home.
Yoda FTW!
Updated Score:
Zippy Zappy = 1
Cartes de Baseball = 1
Round 3:
Kids, don't do drugs. Zippy Zappy takes the lead.
Updated Score:
Zippy Zappy = 2
Cartes de Baseball = 1
Round 4:
Donnie Dewees, a 2nd round pick by the Cubs, went to Kansas City for Alec Mills. Dewees is a good player, but probably nothing more than a 4th outfielder type at the MLB level. Fred Toliver? Yeah... not familiar.
Point to ZZ for name recognition.
Updated Score:
Zippy Zappy = 3
Cartes de Baseball = 1
Round 5:
At this point though, Schwarber is still a young player who has not quite reached his potential as a hitter. Many players never reach their ceiling. Sad, but true.
Point to Nokes and that glorious rookie cup!
Updated Score:
Zippy Zappy = 3
Cartes de Baseball = 2
Round 6:
Gosh, I really like the 1988 Score design. In fact, it's one of my favorite templates to use when making cards using the Rookies App. But, Zobrist is a local boy and an awesome human being. I no nothing about Mike Ramsey. So it goes.
Zorilla gets the point.
Updated Score:
Zippy Zappy = 4
Cartes de Baseball = 2
It's halftime and that means a brief word from our sponsor:
Yep, this coupon was in the middle of the ZZ re-pack.
Round 7:
Johnny Ray had some really nice years at second base for the Angels. Willson Contreras is my most favorite Cub right now. Willson for the win!
Updated Score:
Zippy Zappy = 5
Cartes de Baseball = 2
Round 8:
Joe Carter is one of those guys who will belongs in the Hall of Very Good. Sadly, that isn't a thing. Dylan Cease was my new favorite Cubs farmhand, replacing The Vogelmonster, until Theo & Jed traded him to the White Sox. Jose Quintana is a good pitcher, but Dylan Cease has a chance to be something special.
I'll take Carter here, but only because I grew up on '91 Topps and I'm still upset about Cease moving to the south side of Chicago.
Updated Score:
Zippy Zappy = 5
Cartes de Baseball = 3
Round 9:
Wow. Look at that powder blue uniform! My first Lew Expos card from the Cartes de Baseball repack. Yet, it's not O-Pee-Chee. Huh. Shouldn't an Expo card from a Canadian re-pack be from O-Pee-Chee and not Topps?
Mark Zagunis wins because I'm less confused by him.
Updated Score:
Zippy Zappy = 6
Cartes de Baseball = 3
Round 10:
Chrome Dylan Cease. I already had the paper Bowman, but I needed the chrome. Don Robinson's hat makes me want to watch Pirates of the Caribbean, but that's not enough to be victorious in this round.
Updated Score:
Zippy Zappy = 7
Cartes de Baseball = 3
I dare say that might have been the nail in the coffin. Let's see if ZZ decides to put the subs in or run up the score.
Round 11:
Man, Topps Finest is so sweet looking! 1978 Topps is the only set I own that predates myself. But, this isn't a 1978 Topps card... Queue the trumpet. Waaaa-Waaaa.
Point to the Lester card for stellar card design.
Score:
Zippy Zappy = 8
Cartes de Baseball = 3
Round 12:
This one isn't even fair. My favorite current Cub on a brilliant card design versus Deivi Cruz... a Cardinal? Ouch.
Final Score:
Zippy Zappy = 9
Cartes de Baseball = 3
That does it. Cartes de Baseball had an early lead, but it really lacked the punch to hold the Zippy Zappy repack at bay. ZZ brought the muscle with two Contreras cards, a former Peoria Chief, some Topps Finest, Zorilla and Yoda! Round two is scheduled for tomorrow.
Thanks for stopping by and Happy New Year!
Usually I don't send coupons or whatever but since I got that for free in SI I figure I'd send it your way Mr. Coach.
ReplyDeleteThis coach appreciates it! Thank you!
DeleteRound two better feature some blood.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to round two..
ReplyDeleteMy Five Below has been out of repacks for a long time. I'll have to check again at the start of the season. I miss the randomness.
ReplyDeleteThese repacks don’t stand a chance versus ZZ.
ReplyDeleteMan, you should preface that with "Spoiler Alert" next time. LOL
