I need some input here. If you were a SuperCollector of a player who isn't likely to get much cardboard love in 2018, would you pick up this card?
I mean, hey. It's no shock to me that The Vogelmonster broke up Jake Junis' bid for a no-hitter. Seriously, none of you should be surprised. Sooner or later all pitchers will succumb to The Vogelmonster's hitting prowess. It's simply a fact of life.
But, should I look to add this one to the collection? If I do, I'll pick it up from Ebay and hope I can get it cheaper than purchasing directly from Topps.
I would love to hear what you think in the comments!
I think I would, but at the right price.
ReplyDeleteKeep it in the back of your mind and see if it pops up in a bargain bin in the next 30+ years of your life.
ReplyDeleteTry to get one for under $6 delivered. Charlie Morton didn't get much cardboard love, but I was able to get the Topps Now cards during postseason from TwinsJake for $6ea.
ReplyDeleteI’m going to go the other way and say I wouldn’t. But if you do, you’ve got the right idea going to eBay.
ReplyDeleteI'm biased because I don't think Topps Now are worth the sticker price, but I agree with Zippy. Keep it in mind or on the want list and scour second hand sites in a year or two and you should get a deal.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would. But I also wouldn't collect cameos of my player, either. I just feel like there's too much out there to chase already.
ReplyDeleteI probably would, I have been able to get most of my Giants Topps Now on eBay for under $6 delivered.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you are becoming a Jake Junis suoercollector! I look forward to many future updates on the blog! 😁
ReplyDeleteAs a team collector--even as a player collector--I would not. However, as a SUPER collector, I believe I would. Having a card that commemorates your player breaking up a no-hitter is kinda cool. You should be able to get it for $5.50 on ebay (possibly $5.25) with free shipping and I think that's reasonable to not have to think about it down the road. I doubt Junis is going to sell a lot of copies and, on the secondary market, scarcity is going to drive value. Some dealer somewhere someday might want to get rid of one cheap but, if they only print like 119 copies, how likely are you to find that dealer? If you've watched Topps NOW, everyone buys Ohtani but, the more product lines they extend, the fewer copies of each of the rest sell. Just the big markets and big players (and KC and Junis are neither). I don't like to gamble; I'd rather get it now.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great point. It actually could be one of the rarer Topps NOW issues if there isn't a market for it, which means it's not going to be an easy one to track down.
DeleteI wouldn't pay the Topps Now price for it or Ebay pricing. It will show up in some dealer's quarter box.
ReplyDeleteIf I was a super collector... yes. But that's why I don't consider myself a super collector. I love Gwynn, but I have accepted I'll never own every single card of him.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how super collectors think, but I'm guessing since this was an event that was documented via cardboard then you should buy it. I'm buying all the Pirate Now cards but only basing it on actual releases that are Pirate oriented. So if Jon Lester no hits the Pirates today I won't be buying that card.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would just because it's not player specific. But, that's just me
ReplyDeleteIf you have to ask, it's probably not a good use of limited card budget.
ReplyDeleteGotta draw the line somewhere. Would you buy a checklist card because it has his name listed among 100 other guys? lol
ReplyDeleteThanks for all of the advice, everyone. Many good points all the way around.
ReplyDeleteI've decided to pass on this card. Like Gavin said, you gotta draw the line somewhere and I think I'll chase only the player specific cards as SCC suggested. Also, Josh D. is right... not the best use of my limited card budget, especially since I know I'll never own a copy of every card produced (hat tip to Fuji for getting me to think about that).
